Sterkfontein Caves

2-3 Hours

The Sterkfontein Caves are found in a dolomite hill in the Isaac Edwin Stegman Nature Reserve and the nearby Palaeontological Reserve which are both National Monuments. At a depth of 40 metres, a perfectly calm underground lake is found. Local African tribes regard it with awe, believing that the water has medicinal properties and can even cure blindness. Tribespeople hold ceremonies at the edge of the lake, during which water is carried away, for treatment of the sick.

The Sterkfontein Caves has also been classified as a World Heritage Site. It was in the Sterkfontein Caves that Mrs. Ples and Little Foot were discovered. These are fossilized remains of ape-men who are presumed to be our ancestors. These fossils are known to be more or less 2 to 3 million years old.
